Reading a Seed Packet: What the Labels Actually Mean
Most seed packets carry several labels — Non-GMO, Organic, Heirloom, Hybrid — and most growers have an instinct that some are better than others without knowing exactly why. Here’s what each actually means:
| Label | What it means |
|---|---|
| Non-GMO | Not genetically engineered in a lab. Almost all home-garden seed is non-GMO — GMO seed is largely restricted to a handful of commodity crops sold to commercial growers. |
| Organic (certified) | Grown under USDA National Organic Program standards — no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers on the parent plants that produced the seed. Look for the USDA Organic seal. |
| Heirloom | An open-pollinated variety with a history of 50+ years, passed down through generations. Every heirloom is open-pollinated, but not every open-pollinated variety is old enough to be called an heirloom. |
| Open-pollinated | Pollinated by natural means. Seed saved from an open-pollinated plant grows true to type — this is the label that matters most if you want to save your own seed. |
| Hybrid (F1) | A deliberate cross of two different parent varieties, bred for a specific trait. Not GMO — just conventional plant breeding. Seed saved from a hybrid will not grow true to the parent plant. |
| Untreated | Seed with no fungicide or pesticide coating. Most heirloom-focused companies sell untreated seed by default. |
