Which Direction Should Your Plants Face? A Hemisphere-by-Hemisphere Guide
“Put your plants in a south-facing window” is one of the most repeated pieces of growing advice online — and it’s wrong for roughly a third of the world’s population.
If you’re in Australia, New Zealand, southern Africa, or most of South America, a south-facing window is the worst-lit spot in your apartment. The sun never travels across the southern part of the sky in those locations. It travels across the northern part.
This guide explains why, and gives you the practical tools to map your own space — no matter where in the world you’re reading this.
The One Fact That Changes Everything
The sun rises in the east and sets in the west everywhere on Earth. That part is universal. But where the sun spends most of the day in the sky depends entirely on which hemisphere you’re in:

Northern Hemisphere (United States, Canada, Europe, most of Asia): The sun spends most of the day in the southern part of the sky. South-facing windows and balconies get the most consistent direct light.

Southern Hemisphere (Australia, New Zealand, southern Africa, most of South America): The sun spends most of the day in the northern part of the sky. North-facing spaces get the most light. South-facing spaces are the dimmest.

Near the equator (within roughly 10–15° latitude): The sun passes nearly overhead year-round, and east/west exposure matters more than north/south. Overhead shade structures become more relevant than wall orientation.
The east/west dynamic stays the same regardless of hemisphere: east gets gentler morning light, west gets more intense afternoon light. It’s specifically the north/south relationship that flips when you cross the equator.
Why This Matters More Than People Realize
Most online growing guides are written from a Northern Hemisphere perspective — because most of the English-language internet was historically produced there. This means that advice about “south-facing windows,” seasonal growing calendars, and even which direction to tilt a greenhouse panel can be actively misleading for Southern Hemisphere growers.
If you’re in the Southern Hemisphere and you’ve followed Northern Hemisphere growing advice without adjusting it, this is often why your sunniest window didn’t perform as expected.
How Much the Season Changes Things
The sun’s position in the sky doesn’t stay constant through the year — it shifts both in height (how high it climbs) and in exact direction (where it rises and sets on the horizon). How much it shifts depends on how far you are from the equator.
Relatively little seasonal swing — the sun stays high most of the year. Planting timing follows rainfall patterns more than light changes.
A pronounced swing. The sun sits noticeably higher in summer and much lower in winter. A spot that gets full sun in June might be mostly shaded in December because the low winter sun angle is blocked by a neighboring building or overhang that does nothing to the high summer sun.
The most extreme swing — very long summer days, very short and low-angle winter days. Supplemental grow lighting becomes close to essential for winter growing at these latitudes.
A one-day light assessment done in midsummer can significantly overstate how much light a spot gets in winter. If you’re planning a system that runs year-round, repeat a quick light check near each solstice (around June 21 and December 21) to see both extremes.
How to Map Your Own Light: A Simple Exercise
You don’t need any equipment for this — just a clear day and about 10 minutes spread across the day.
Step 1: Check your space every 2 hours from morning to evening. Note whether it’s in direct sun, bright indirect light, or dim shade at each check. Jot it down or use your phone’s notes app.
Step 2: Check which direction your window or balcony faces. A compass app on most smartphones does this accurately in seconds.
Step 3: Count your total hours of direct sun.
Use these as rough guides:
– 6+ hours of direct sun per day: Fruiting vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers) can grow without supplemental lighting
– 4–6 hours: Leafy greens and most herbs will do well
– Under 4 hours: You’ll likely need supplemental grow lighting for anything beyond shade-tolerant herbs
Step 4: Note what’s causing the shade. A neighboring building, an overhang, or a tree can block low-angle winter sun while doing nothing to summer sun that passes high overhead. Knowing what’s casting the shadow tells you whether it will change across the seasons.

The Most Common Mistake
Apartment growers often assess a space once, in their first week in a new home, and never revisit it. A spot that looked perfect in one season can be surprisingly dim in another — particularly at mid-latitudes, where the sun’s height shifts dramatically.
The fix is simple: do a quick re-check in a different season. Compare your summer light map to your winter light map. If there’s a significant difference, plan for it — either by moving containers to follow the sun, adding supplemental lighting in the low-light months, or switching to more shade-tolerant crops for winter.
