Wicking Buckets vs. Kratky Jars: Which Self-Watering Method Fits Your Life?
If you’ve ever killed a plant because you forgot to water it — or overwatered it because you were anxious about the first problem — self-watering systems are worth understanding properly.
Two of the most accessible are the wicking bucket and the Kratky non-circulating hydroponic jar. They both reduce how often you need to water. They work through completely different physics. And they’re suited to different plants and different kinds of growers.
Here’s how to tell which one makes sense for your space.
The Wicking Bucket: Capillary Action in a Container
A wicking bucket is a double-container system: a soil-filled upper chamber sits above a sealed water reservoir. A wicking cup — a small pot with holes drilled in the sides and bottom — bridges the two, allowing water to climb from the reservoir into the soil through capillary action.
Capillary action is the same physics that lets a paper towel soak up a spill: water moves through tiny pores in the wicking cup and soil, traveling upward against gravity. As the plant draws water from the root zone, the pressure differential pulls more up from the reservoir below. The plant essentially regulates its own watering — a thirstier plant on a hot day pulls more, without you doing anything differently.
An overflow hole drilled through the outer bucket wall prevents the reservoir from overfilling. A fill pipe running down through the upper soil chamber lets you refill the reservoir directly without disturbing the roots.
What the wicking bucket is best for
- Tomatoes and peppers — the steady, consistent moisture supply is particularly valuable here. Inconsistent watering is the number-one cause of blossom-end rot in both crops. A wicking bucket all but eliminates that inconsistency.
- Zucchini and summer squash — heavy water users that benefit from the reservoir buffer.
- Any grower who travels — the reservoir extends watering intervals to roughly once a week, depending on heat and plant size.
- Beginners working with soil — if you’re not ready to move into pure hydroponics, the wicking bucket is the most forgiving middle ground.

The Kratky Jar: Passive Hydroponics (No Pump, No Power)
The Kratky method is a hydroponic system — no soil, no pump, no electricity required. It was developed by Dr. B.A. Kratky at the University of Hawaii’s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, tested across multiple lettuce and vegetable trials, and published in peer-reviewed proceedings in 2004 and 2009.
The setup is deceptively simple: a plant grows in a net cup suspended in the lid of an opaque container. The container holds a hydroponic nutrient solution. At the start, the roots just reach the water. As the plant drinks the reservoir down, an air gap forms naturally between the liquid surface and the net cup — and the upper portion of the root system colonizes that air gap, taking up oxygen rather than nutrients.
This is the elegant part: the system creates its own oxygenation. A typical hydroponic setup requires an air pump to oxygenate the roots. Kratky’s finding was that passive evaporation of the reservoir achieves the same thing, as long as you don’t top the jar off mid-cycle (doing so collapses the air gap and suffocates those oxygen-seeking roots).
What the Kratky jar is best for
- Lettuce and other leafy greens — the most reliable Kratky crop by a wide margin; the method was designed around lettuce and it shows. Rapid growth, clean harvests, no soil mess.
- Basil and compact herbs — also very reliable in a Kratky setup.
- Apartment growers with no outdoor space — the jar sits on a counter or under a grow light without drainage concerns.
- True “set-and-forget” growing — once the reservoir is filled and the plant is seated, there’s genuinely nothing to do until harvest except check that the reservoir isn’t empty.
What Kratky is NOT best for
- Tomatoes and peppers in a small jar — these crops need a much larger reservoir than a standard mason jar provides, and they typically do better in a Dutch bucket or DWC setup with nutrients supplemented regularly.
- Growers who can’t resist checking on things — the biggest Kratky mistake is topping off the reservoir mid-cycle. If you know you’re going to do this, a wicking bucket may be the more forgiving choice.
